- I, too, take the head off to reduce weight, and also separate from the transmission, leaving it in the car. I reinstall the engine without the head and put it on after the engine is in place and bolt

- I almost always remove/install the engine with the head OFF. Couple of advantages: 1 - less weight, easier to move the engine about to mate the engine/gearbox 2 - I don't have to remove the bonnet/ho
