Thanks for the reply Charlie, I never removed the cover on the side when I orginally removed the shifter, so I might already be screwed. The shifter will not move any farther to the right than the 3r

The problem was I had the springy thing in the wrong hole (ouch!) and the reverse plunger was froze. I inserted it in the right hole (with the appropriate sweet nothings) and unfroze the plunger and
