When push comes to shove, you can always spring for a handheld GPS unit. That will give you your most accurate forward speed based on triangulation with at least three satellites. Just a thought... (

Had a problem with 'dead' spots on my starter, too. Upon taking it apart I found the brushes had worn way down. Ordered a new set and changed out the worn pair. Funny, only one pair was worn way down
