- Yes, the oils have gotten better and so have the parts they are designed to protect. Unfortunately the brass synchro rings in our cars are vintage 1960's and are damaged by sulfur additives in gear

- The best way to know if the oil has sulfur in it is to read the label. I think that all GL-5 types of gear oil has Alkyl Sulfide and I don't think that GL-4 oils do. Synthetic oils will be too slick
