Every 240 circuit I've seen has two 120 volt breakers ganged (connected) together (i.e. a 30 amp 240 circuit has 2 15 amp 120 breakers) - one breaker for each (120 volt) leg of the 240 volts circuit.

What was there originally? Do the bolts pass thru a "U" shaped channel with the bar located in the middle of the "U"? If so, the bolts are in "double shear" and not subject to bending loads. If not,

Actually, there is a provision. On many (most?) differentials, you are supposed to remove the cover and let the gear oil pour out. Then clean out the gunk, apply a new gasket, and replace the cover.
