Via the oil Eric. You get some splash-up from around the pump shaft area, and also that which drains back to the pain in the lifter valley. That said, it's a good idea anyway to put some assembly lub

If this is a V8, the groove towards the bottom feeds oil to the driver's side bank of lifters. Since there's no seal there, it drips oil on the gear. An old trick is to file a small grove right there
