Hi Mark, I just have about two feet of hose and it hangs next to my distributer. It smokes a little but it is about the same as the tappet breather pipe which is also just exposed to the atmosphere.

I have also had pretty good luck with Palo Alto Speedometer. I had a problem with my MGA speedo and they fixed it in a week. Then I had another problem with it and they fixed in a week at no charge.
