Perhaps a piece of debris in the fuel that blocked the main jet. On a cold engine, dump the float bowl onto a white paper towel. Didja find it? If it keeps happening you may want to clean the carb. Y

With all the other well thought out and "purpose designed" items in the MG, I can't understand your skepticism. I think MG had a big box of the graphite bearings in the warehouse (they got 'em cheap)

1) Also check the ground connections, neither the front (CB) nor rear light clusters have 'proper' ground connections, they just ground through the bodywork. Tired bulbs can also cause this problem.
