I thing what we are talking about here is that there wasn't a switch to lower idle (at least to my knowledge) and a worn throw out bearing may be causing this problem. Am I following this correctly?

I would check the throttle linkage shaft bushes. If there is any play in the linkage where it enters the carb it will leak air and the car will run very sporatically. (ask me how I learned this) The

What I do is to gas it a bit to get car rolling and then try to roll car in neutral as long as I can, that or try to just roll at idle in 1st gear. Then again traffic in BOulder doesn't get that bad
