I just removed the front bushings drilled and tapped them and fitted a grease nipple. While they were out I drove a tapered brass plug into the fulcrum pin to stop the grease going to only one side a

Sounds like you have put standard size shoes into oversize drums and you're only getting contact on a very small area of the shoes. It could take some time to wear them down to get full contact. You
