In the plant I used to work in, we used Goretex packing glands, it came on a roll that you cut to length. Don't know how expensive it is, but you should check it out. We never had a problem with it.

There are actually 2 part numbers for the 6 cylinder cars which explains your findings. Up until late 59, the part number was 556234, and the 60- was 54520673. Note the earlier number also fit the A
