Do you by any chance have a throttle return spring on the opposite side of the carb from the lonkage connection? It basically sounds like a problem with the progression circuit, which comes into play

Vince--Since the problem started after a period when the carb seemed to work, I would look for a plugging or air leak problem. The throttle shaft/butterfly warpage possibility is real but less likely

What are you using for fuel pressure? I had a similar problem when my fuel pressure was too high. It varies the level in the float bowl too much and the engine runs too rich at low RPM but cleans out
