I've been told that the shims are a function of the diff carrier rather than the ring and pinion so the original shim stack should go back in very close to correct. I'd love to be corrected if others

It depends entirely on which shims you are talking about. THe ones on the output bearings affect the bearing load on those parts, but the ones that are on the pinion shaft set the pinion bearing prel

You are of course correct. I somehow envisioned we were talking about the bearing shims and didn't even consider the pinion shims.. Steve

Wow you had to beat it apart! I made a spreader tool from some drawings in the Standard parts Diff repair manual. Worked like charm. I did not have all the fancy dial calipers to do the gear mesh so
