It's not the coil that reqiures the ballast resistor, it's the points in the distibutor that triggers the coil. Running at 12 volts constantly would burn out the points over time. Therefore the balla

The coil is rated for around 8 volts. Applying a full 12 volts will destroy the coil. The ballast resister drops approximately 4 volts so the coil receives its rated 8 volts. When cranking the batter

BTW, when you connect the coil primary make sure the polarity is correct. Reversing the polarity will burn the ground tab off of your plugs. Best regards, Fred Schroeder roadster@schroeder-family.us
