I've scratched my head on this a few times myself. Question...Gas CAN be refined to a higher octane (anti knock) without additives. So, isn't detonation (explosion) just a degree of the same process

This is part of the paradox. Gasoline in a homogenous mixture, with no air turbulence, will burn at the rate of approximately 2 cm per second. If you think of a piston being 6 cm in diameter, and a

So Tom, Is the higher-priced premium really needed? I always use it in my cars - a 1500, and a Miata with the timing advanced. And it "feels" better, but since San Francisco has the highest gas price

My understanding is the reason that lower octane fuels are more prone to detonation is not due to faster burn, but due to a more precise light-off. That is, detonation is premature light-off, say fro

Good information, Thanks. The burn rate is the same, but the lower octane fuel is less resistant to pre ignition and denotation. Also the fuels will be blended differently for summer and winter form

Hi Leigh The octane you use is dependent on a number of things, all of which add up to a car's tendency to ping. High compression, high initial advance, sharp spots in the combustion chambers, etc.
