The hydraulic method worked great for me. instead of the input shaft, I had a metric nut-driver that was just the right size, filled the cavity with grease and tapped it out without breaking a sweat.

Yes, you can polish it in place with plenty of elbow grease, soft cloth, and Autosol, Flitz or a similar polish. I found Autosol at the local supermarket. Comes in a toothpaste type tube.
