Actual cause of warpage is two fold. Heat build up combined with impact pressure. Much of this can be mitigated by the angle of the blast nozzle and constant movement of that same nozzle. Real point:

I have seen a nice conversion on an Alpine using a 1600 cc Toyota motor and auto trans. Fast and reliable. If you ever see an Alpine with a Superman "S" for the hood badge, look out. DR. Moonstone

Try looking at the inside of the cap itself. Check for carbon tracking. I had a TR-4 that lit me up similar to your experience. Rare occurrence but it does happen. DR. Moonstone
