I"ll be as brief as possible. On my 72, the upper, inner spring cap, (the part that holds the collets in position), is a forged part. I recently found one of mine to be fractured. Just enough remaine

There is a sparkplug adapter available that enables one to use commpressed air to hold up the valve. I would first have the cylinder piston at tdc just incase the valve falls. The adapter is readely

It's pretty low tech, but you could put the piston at 'bottom' dead center, push some soft nylon or cotton cord into the bore, then raise the piston up so that the bunched-up cord pushes up on the v

You're so right. I used the 'cord-in-the-cylinder' trick to get a reluctant head off my six. The way things usually go when I work on it, if there is a way to go wrong it will! Guess I was thinking

Keep in mind that putting pressure in the cylinder will try to move the piston to BDC - be careful. mjb.

My clever solution to keep the valve from falling into the cylinder is crude, but easy and very effective. It works well on single spring valves, not sure about the double sping ones. Simply take a

Many thanks for the interest and multiple super-helpful suggestions for holding the valve in position without removing the head. If I were Jim, (did I really say that), the prize would go to Paul E
