John, be sure the FULL voltage from the ignition switch is getting to the solenoid. Ive seen broken wires in the harness and (more often) a failing ignition switch be the culprit in these cases. Jim

If the voltage is low from the ignition switch to the solenoid, the plunger in the solenoid may not be fully extending on activation. This can cause weak engagement or just a click at the solenoid.
