I don't know that engine or the implementation in your TVR, but water 
should still circulate through the block and head with the thermostat 
closed.

Why? Isn't it the job of the thermostat to maintain the engine 
temperature at a certain level? If you have and 82 degree thermostat and 
the gauge says 90 at equilibrium, I'd say neither is far off. You can't 
expect the temp gauge to be totally accurate.

4 liters sounds way too small. Most cars take 3-4 gallons, I can't 
imagine any cooling system in a 2.5 liter car taking less than 8 liters, 
unless there's something else in the cooling system, either air or solid 
deposits, sand, crud, etc., taking up the extra volume.

And anyway, is this the correct forum for discussing such things? My 
understanding is this was for discussing matters of VTR Club business, 
not Triumph cars. You might get more action on one of the other forums, 
such as the triumph list or the big British cars list.
