Hi all,

I have a '73 TR6 engine in a '73 TVR 2500M. I know its not a Triumph but I
hope you don't hold that against me!
That's OK - they're still cool cars. <grin>

Anyhow, the engine was recently completely rebuilt. I decided to go with a
high quality synthetic oil.
I'm a big fan of synthetics (but not for break in).

What are the recommendations for breaking in a new (rebuilt) TR6 engine?
Here's what I do (others may have other ideas):

Start with a decent quality dino oil - don't break in on synthetic,
the oil is too slippery to let the rings and everything seat properly.

For the first 20 minutes or so, vary the revs and try to keep them
between 2,000 and 3,500 to break in the cam. Then let the motor
cool and do an oil and filter change. Then, drive the car more or
less as you intend to, but slowly increase your rev limit from 3,500
to your normal redline over the first 1,000 miles. Make sure that
you do go to redline several times during the break in period, though.
I would do oil and filter changes at about 200, 500 and 1,000 miles
with dino oil, then change to synthetic and use your normal oil
and filter change intervals. If you can, cut the oil filters apart and
inspect them at these first oil changes to make sure that there's not
a lot of crud floating around in the engine.

I've had very good luck with this protocol.

Have fun,
