Actually, I think Jack could have/should have said;
"If my predecessor classed you in 3H and I can confirm it, then HSR is good
by its word and you can race your next event in 3H. However, we changed the
tire rule this year, so you'll have to run in 3A or for not points as 3X.
Since you would be the only 3A entered, I'll still run you with the
production cars. However, pending my confirmation of the previous
classification and your switching to conforming bias-ply tires, you can race
the next event in 3H"
However he actually said:
" I don't have anyplace for this thing to run"
" It doesn't matter what Joe said, I'm the new Competition Director"
" Since you're already here, maybe you can run this weekend only, no more"
" You can run as a 3X, but you will have to buy new tires"
" I'll be watching you. If you have any problems in practice, your weekend
is over"
Oh, and by the way, 3A is only small-block sports racers. Can-Am cars go in
class C1

Finally someone has put their finger on the real issue in that
situation. Jack Lewis had 3 choices: 1) let him run in a treaded tire
production group with slicks -- unacceptable 2) let him run a production
car on slicks in a Group with IMSA and Group C cars -- unacceptable and 3)
let him run his A/SR Jagrolet in a production group on treaded tires even
though it does not fit any class within that group -- still not great but
Jack was willing to compromise.
Whether it could have been done with a softer touch (according to the
entrant) I can't fault the choices given to the competitor.
