OK,
I made a tool for the Armstrong shocks on my Lotus 61: a spanner of sorts
with two pins, so I could unscrew the top cover. (Oh yea, I used my dremel
to grind out the peen on the side first so the top could be unscrewed).
After removing the top I drained the oil, then disassembled the shock and
cleaned it in carburetor cleaner. I replaced the 'O' rings, reassembled the
shock, and filled it 2/3 full with 15wt. motorcycle fork tube oil.
Bench testing them, they work fine. Rotating the adjusters causes
significant changes in firmness, so I'm assuming they will work OK when I
drive the car.
Good luck,
