FWIW, a few years back I was having a similar miss starting about 4500 on my
Sprite. I thought I was doing all of the right things, I had a Lucas Gold
coil which produced something like 50,000 volts and I also had installed an
MSD distributor.

After much frustration I took it to my ace mechanic and he put it on an
Allen Smartscope and in a few brief runs up and down the rpm range he said
he had found the problem. He said I had done too many good things and they
added up to bad. Apparently, both the coil and the MSD system have the
effect of increasing voltage at the expense of spark duration. I was getting
fantastic voltage but at too short a duration to propagate a flame after
about 4500 RPM. He sent me off to a parts store to get a Nyehoff epoxy
filled coil that he said was a good quality coil but didn't put out the high
voltage of the Lucas. We installed it and I still had a nice high voltage
and had a good spark duration. After that I regularly turned 7K and sometime
even a bit more.

Your problem might be as simple as this.....I hope so,,,,,because less than
$15 solved mine.
