Do you think this would work?
You could make a dummy spacer the same thickness as the main or rod cap, with
a hole through it. Then insert the fastener such as a stud or cap bolt
through the hole and place a nut on the other end.
Run everything up snug, measure length, tighten to stretch spec. counting the
flats.
The number of flats then becomes the spec. when doing the final assembly.
