All very good points.  Let me tell you what I've learned. 
I've found a valve cup manufacturer that will make them 
for what I consider a reasonable price.  They will be the 
latest technology with modern coatings, etc.  Besides the 
spring/guide/bore dimensions (resulting in the large diameter) 
I've found that the valve cup top surface indicates to the 
valve cup manufacturer that the base circle of the cam lobe 
is quite large and requires the large diameter.  The wear 
pattern is nearly the entire dia. of the cup.
