My 2 cents on ballast resistors:
My experience with ballast resistors (or lack thereof) is
that they ARE NOT optional where recommended. I race a
MGB that I bought as a partially race prepped shell. It
came with a Crane electronic ignition and a giant yellow
ACCELL brand SUPER-coil. The mechanic who first got it
running for me decided that the ballast resistor didn't
need to be there and bypassed it to get "more spark". On
my very first outing while sitting on the grid, the coil
EXPLODED and shot fragments and foamy, hot, yellow "spooge"
all over everything. I later confirmed that the ACCELL coil
does require a resistor as did the CRANE coil I purchased to
replace it. Others specifically state resistors are not
to be used and presumably have the resistance "engineered"
into the design.
