Actually most rulebooks (not just vintage) prohibit contact, and in many
cases it ends up taking out both the "contacter" and the "contactee" so
neither win. The current practice of contact racing appears to come from
stock car racing or to produce footage for Duke Video.
We raced and attended races throughout the 60s and early 70s and I can
assure you that intentional contact was very rare and nobody ever got
away with it. Sportsmanship was the guideline.
Contact in racing as well as "road rage" and the epidemic of reckless
driving on the street seems to be encouraged by the fact that the cars
are much safer. If you don't fear getting hurt, you drive like a fool, I
suppose.
