Thanks for the overwhelming response. I've managed to find a 97 rulebook
that outlines the Improved Touring the in's & outs. The good news is that
the midget gets to be the lightest car out there (1435 lbs). What do those
vintage guys tare out as??
As far as setup - not a whole lot trick can go on. Motor gets to be
balanced / blueprinted and overbored to .040 (No cam / rocker / valve
springs / or compression changes allowed <frown>). Transmission must stay
the same ratio's, but any final drive and differential is allowed (so my
4.88 / 5.11 / 5.38 quaiffe goes in, heheh). Suspension must stay pretty
much the same, springs/bars are unlimited (so I get the 500 lb springs and
1" front bar). Does anyone know if the tube shock front conversion
"mounts" to the same location as stock?? Ride height must be 5" from
ground to bottom of rocker (Stock, it seems to be over 7" - my prepared
midget is about 2.5"!) Wheel size will be 13 X 6" (must run DOT rubber).
My '72 car I plan on converting seems to get more rusty the deeper I dig.
Not a big problem, I do want it as light as possible <wink>. I am
considereing getting it dipped first (does anyone have any hints?). I will
be looking for body panels - hood, outer rockers, left rear fender (it's
bondo city). Again, any tips on locating cheap panels would be
appreciated. I'm almost to the point at trying to find a rust free '72-'74
tub (round rear wheel wells) - I know it's a long shot, but this thing's
gotta be done by April.
Also, I was thinking that a hard top may reduce drag. Any leads on a
cheapy HT??
Note to my friends on the MG list. Observe that this is not a grenade
hooked to my right foot - most street cars have a hotter motor that this!
(although the motor in my SOLO II midget IS a 16:1 / 8750 rpm fragmentation
grenade!) Living in Michigan, I no longer ride motor cycles or take LBC's
out on public roads (the roads are terrible & so are the drivers). Not
trying to start ANY flaming - but I do feel safer with a 5 pt harness /
helmet / and NASCAR bars on the track than with the zero seat belts and
"crash" pad in my bugeye on I-275 (where the ave speed is about 80 mph)...
(But I do miss driving on the street, without a doubt)
