These comments apply to auto policies written to comply with California
law; as to other states, ymmv. Frankly, I would not expect the typical
auto policy, to cover the contents of a trailer, whether enclosed or
not. My own policy, for example, covers owned trailers for purposes of
liability, but not for collision damage unless specifically listed as a
covered vehicle, and then not to exceed $500.

My race car is insured under a Lloyd's of London policy through Parish
Insurance. The basic coverage of that policy excludes claims arising if
the vehicle is not normally kept at locked premises at a specific
scheduled address.

In additional, there is extended coverage for "Road Risk," which is
intended to cover the car when it is in transit or in a place other than
the normal location-- essentially, everywhere except when it is being
driven under its own power on the race track. There is an exclusion
where the car is "left unattended unless all reasonable safety
precautions have been taken for the safety and security of the insured
vehicle, its trailer and the towing vehicle."

I do not believe that this policy would differentiate between a car in
an enclosed trailer and one on an open trailer. I say this as an
attorney with 20+ years in practice, a substantial portion of which
relates to insurance coverage. Also, I sure hope I am right on this, as
I have an open trailer.
