Sunroof Installation Problem

I'm putting in (or trying to) the sunroof and I have a problem.

The middle metal strap is 31 1/2" long.... and the opening is 30 1/4 " wide.
Do I assume correctly that I have to bend he hell out of it so it will fit ?
And if this is true, will the pressure applied due to the bend not hamper the
roof moving fore and aft ?
