It depends on the design of the transmission. In some cars, the lubrication
of the bearing on the rear of the transmission depends on movement in the
front part of the transmission. Coasting in neutral while driving does not
normally last long enough to make any difference, but continuous towing of
the car can starve the bearing of needed lubrication. On my
autocross/mini-stock Cortina, when we saw smoke, I stopped on the
shoulder. Our mechanic crawled under to look around and burned his hand on
the tailpiece. Lucky for him, there was water in the roadside ditch.
