Actually, both current and voltage are regulated by the same spool (neither one 
very well).  The other spool is the cutout, which
disconnects the generator from the battery when the engine is stopped (or 
turning too slow to generate).  This keeps the battery
from discharging through the generator (which otherwise tries to act like a 
motor).
