the premise was oil would allow fine particals of bronze and steel from
the screw thread grinding as you turn, to fall out of suspension to the
bottom of the assy rather than acting as a grinding compound between the
threaded faces.
Modern greases though greatly eliminate this problem.
Personally I do use synthetic grease these days, having only switched
over about 10 years ago.
