This a subject has been discussed recently, but I'm not sure I really heard
any useable answers. I have oil coming out of the dip stick and the rear
seal. I sealed the dip stick with felt, but I think that made the real seal
leak worse.
Replacing the PCV value didn't help. Opening the oil filler cap reveals a
lot of air coming out. I don't think that opening the crankcase breather
hole on a PVC controlled engine is the right thing to do since that would
screw around with the vacuum system. I guess I'm looking for a
troubleshooting technique to do a diagnosis of the problem.
How much blow-by is too much? Can it be measured? Does anybody have a spec?
I'm about to run a leak down test to troubleshoot blow-by. How much a % loss
can I expect? How much of a variation between cylinders should be expected?
A compression test show the cylinders as 160-175-175-165, and the difference
between the inner and outer two cylinders concerns me.
Is there something else I should be looking for?
In August I plan to make the 1500 mile trek from San Diego to Breckenridge
and want a car that will make it there and back without leaving a big oil
trail.
