I think if coolant had been exiting via the overflow pipe to the road, you'd
have driven past it before you could smell it.
I think when under pressure, a fine spray of atomized coolant is coming from a
pin-hole perforation in the radiator (passenger side top, perhaps, or maybe
the side of the top hose) and that caused the wet patch on the underside of
the bonnet.
