I am recovering my seats. I have always noticed the small spring books on the
base of seat base which I always assumed they helped hold the seat cushions in
place.
But in reading Roger Williams in "How to Restore Triumph TR2, TR3 & 3A" he
says in Figure 16-16 that "The proper bottom cover is hessian fitted after the
cover has been secured," I began wondering if I should put something there.
He then mentioned the rectangular holes in the cover for the spring clips. It
was then that I measured the distance from the back of the seat to the clips &
then the distance from the back of the seat cushion to the 1/8th inch bars on
the bottom of the spring fixture. They are not even close - approximately a
2 inch difference!!!!
So did some DPO screw up my seat springs? Or are the spring clip there
because of some 1950 safety requirement? Or are the clip there because that
is the way that carriage cushions had been made in the UK for the King's
carriages for the past 400 years?
My current thought is to get rid of the springs & put a thin piece of flexible
plastic on the bottom of each seat cushion. Or just ignore the seat spring
clips at the expense of ticking off a bunch of dead Royal seat makers who
could put a curse on my car!!!
