No Paul, it won't damage anything at all.  It just means that you will not
get an accurate reading if you try to set the ignition timing after turning
the engine backwards.

I turn mine backwards all the time, when setting the valve lash.  In that
case, I'm not worried about exact timing between crankshaft and camshaft, so
I'm not worried about backlash in the timing chain.
