Of course Standard-Triumph never used anything like that, especially not in
1948 ...

(Hint, there is a sprag clutch in every Laycock overdrive.)

And American cars offered free wheeling long before 1960 as well.  It was
eventually discontinued because it put more load on the (inadequate) brakes
of the time.
