The "cages" are just bent sheetmetal. The two sides that are not welded can
and often do spring out allowing the nuts to turn. A little squeeze with a
pair of pliers to bring them back in to proper position should stop the
spinning.
If you go the hex nut and bolt route you will be wishing you hadn't by about
the fifth one in an awkward position. Some will just about require a second
person.
