I asked the Shell Ask Me site about the issue of using diesel oil on our
engines and got the following response. Seems to confirm the list consensus.

Subject: RE: Rotella Ask Our Expert:
Gasoline Engines
Dear Rod,
Zinc levels are being lowered on almost all
engine oils, but the heavy duty diesel engine oils, such as the Rotella T,
will continue to have higher levels than the passenger car/gasoline engine
oils. The Rotella T 15W-40 meets API SL, SJ, SH and all previous
specifications for gasoline engines. Although the amount of zinc is
decreasing, the wear protection will continue to be as good or better than the
previous formulations. We are just using different chemistries in the
additive package. The 15W-40 viscosity is heavier than what is recommended
for most gasoline engines, but if you feel comfortable with it, then there
should be no problem. Rotella T 15W-40 is recommended for and used in many
mixed fleet applications. It does have a higher antiwear level to protect the
heavy duty diesel engines and should give you very good performance in this
regard.
Thank you for your interest in our products! If you have any further
questions, please call us at 800 231 6950.
Sincerely,
MaryCarol Boemmel

There
has been a lot of discussion among the Triumph and MG classic car community
about modern oils causing premature crank failure due to lower levels of ZDDP.
None of these cars have catalytic converters.
One proposition is to
substitute Rotella for conventional oils such as Castrol 20W50, since its
level of ZDDP is higher.
Is this a good idea? If so, which Rotella
formulation would be best?
