Summarizing Jim's blog questions:
Q: How is blogging different from web-based newspaper columns, bulletin
board systems, or public conversation? With so many blogs online, how
does a regular Joe or Jim shift through all the noise?
A: Blogs are not really different. Blogs have features of each, a static
web site melded with a discussion tool. At it's simplest, a blog is just
a website that displays user entries in reverse chonological order. It's
similar to a written journal in that entries are in order, but the
format doesn't require that the author write about how Kristen told her
that she likes Devon even though they both know that Olivia wants Devon
to ask her to the middle school dance. (check MySpace to find out who
Devon took to the dance.) Blog publishing tools are really easy to use,
so literally anyone can start a blog in a few minutes -- and it takes no
technical skills to add a comment to a blog, so readers can join a blog
'conversation' even if they can't spell "HTML".
Why are blogs great for car enthusiasts? Well, the journal format is an
easy way to share the progress of a restoration. It's easy to write up
road trips throughout the year, or for car clubs to share event reports
-- other club members could easily add their own write-ups or photos.
How about a blog for Blake's *America's British Reliability Run? I
remember some nice write-ups on this list; those would be great
marketing if shared on a blog on his ABRR site. *Researching TR4 factory
rally cars? Post photos and write-ups as you find them, and invite other
rally enthusiasts to share their photos and recollections. How about an
FOT blog? I'd read that.
How do you find signal through the noise? The challenge of finding good
information isn't new. I walked into the library last week to find a
good book for my wife. I walked through the aisles, but just looking I
couldn't tell the good from the bad. So I asked a librarian for a
recommendation. Here's my expert recommendation. Check out this blog
written by a fellow prepping a big Healey for the Targa Newfoundland.
Good shop and action photos!
