I'm not sure if this is universally true, but I think so. Cracks have a
small tip which is the point at which energy is concentrated. The crack tip
helps force apart more material. If you can release the energy, you can
stop the crack from growing. With celluloid cylinder records and with brass
cymbals, you drill a small hole at the tip of the crack. I believe if you
drill a small hole at the tip of the crack in the casting, you will stop the
crack from growing. You could then fill the hole with epoxy to seal it up.
The epoxy, being flexible would not concentrate energy the way the crack tip
does.
