All I can say is that was NOT the case for me.  Everything seemed to be fine
after I saw the hole, and I drove the car roughly a year that way.  But I
believe the crack was growing all that time, until it was eventually big enough
to cause a problem.

I guess whether that qualifies as "harm" or not is up to you.  In my case,
either way the bellhousing had to be welded.  It just would have been lots
easier to weld if I had done the work when I first saw the hole, instead of
waiting until the crack ran all around the bellhousing.

Actually, that housing is still in my parts pile, waiting for TR4 housings to be
valuable enough to bother with welding them back up <G>
