In addition to TeriAnn's site, it's perhaps worth noting that Triumph
deleted the thermostat skirt on later TRs, and listed the non-skirted
thermostat as a supercession for the earlier skirted variety. The TR4-4A
thermostat housings did have a smaller passage for the bypass, which may or
may not be relevant.

In tests carried out on my own TR3A, I've not been able to measure the
effect on cooling caused by the presence or lack of a skirt. Of course, I
use an electric fan to cover cooling at idle, which I suspect is the only
area where the skirt helps. At higher engine rpm, there is plenty of water
flow through the radiator, so losing some flow to the bypass makes no
significant difference.

Except for the skirt, I believe bellows (aneroid) thermostats are inferior
in every way to the later "wax pellet" type. The world's carmakers seem to
agree, since Triumph was one of the last to quit using the bellows type.

YMMV, of course.
