Yep, That is where you went wrong. Haynes' specs are way too wide for the
1500 engine. The spec for the earlier engines is .004 to .008 and IMHO,
should be used for the 1500 as well.

Sorry, I should have included the measurements.
OK, I was going by Haynes, which says Crankshaft endfloat 0.006 to 0.014 in.
Using a feeler guage:
Before thrust washer/ main bearing replacement: 0.009 in
After: 0.006 in
