Having tried it both ways (Stags always had the OD switch in the shift
knob), I'm not sure I would agree with that statement.  For a sports car
being driven hard, there's a lot to be said for being able to shift in/out
of OD without taking either hand off the wheel.  In a sports car, there's
also something to be said for a big, robust switch with positive
connections.  The in-knob switch seems much more prone to failure than at
least the dash-mounted switch used on the TR3.  (My 1959 dash switch still
works fine, but I've had to replace the knob switch in both 71 Stags.)

Looking at the hollow shift lever for a TR3, it seems clear to me that
someone was planning to put the OD switch in the knob, but never (AFAIK)
went through with the idea.  I suspect the reasons above had something to do
with that.
