The tool I had didn't seem to want to work, so I wound up using a slide
hammer.  But I'd try the oil seal tool first.

Yup.

Yup.  When installed in the housing, the two halfshafts touch in the center
(through a small block in the diff) and so hold each other into their
respective bearings.  The clearance is controlled by those shims behind the
brake backing plate.

Definitely !  Next question is how did they get loose ... I'd be looking very
carefully for distortion in the bolts, busted shims, distorted flange, etc.
Those bolts take a lot of force when cornering hard and/or hitting bumps, so
make sure they are in good shape.  I'm not sure offhand what is special about
them, but from the part number, they are not standard hardware items.  So, I
wouldn't replace them with hardware store bolts.
