Something is clearly wrong. Engaging the OD should either raise the speedo or lower the tach, even with the rear wheels not touching anything (or the driveshaft disconnected). One possibility is that you've moved the switch the wrong way, so what you think is engagement is actually disengagement. The factory switch works backwards to what most Americans expect : up is off and down is on. (Although it is possible to wire it either way.)
