Well after months of effort and repeated failures to correct the bump
steer in my converted Pinto rack and pinion steering I surrendered. I
am installing the Revington rack and pinion.
A note on this system is the need to install a grease zerk in the plug
for the pinion housing. A short zerk will not allow the grease gun to
engage. I found a zerk in my parts collection that had an i/2" extended
shank. This would allow the grease gun to engage but with the rack
mounted in place it would be impossible to grease it during normal
service. The grease zerk points at a 45 degree angle upwards toward my
radiator.
So I searched the internet. I found an extended zerk in a coupler. The
manufacturer was a food processing machinery manufacturer. Their rep
could not identify the product and could not sell me one anyway.
So yesterday I stopped at Knox Industrial Hardware. They had a
selection of grease fittings that had extensions. The longest one, 1",
had a screw in zerk. So I got a 90 degree zerk to replace the straight
one in the extension. Now the zerk will point down from the rack at 45
degrees and I can reach it with the grease gun.
